Small Town Living In Mexico: Shopping For Groceries

- Price and Quality you can expect to find at Farmers’ Markets and Grocery Stores
So that you can compare apples to apples against grocery store shopping in the States, correspondent Elaine Cholas, American expat and owner of romaninmexico put together some samples of prices in the Chapala lakeside area.
“You can find less expensive food at the open markets, which occur weekly in villages. These prices were at Soriana’s in Chapala but are competitive prices,” said Cholas, “Also, food down here tastes better, we think. Eggs, chicken, fresh fruits and veggies especially just taste better.”
Cholas reports many people have avocado, lime, orange, papaya, mango, etc. trees in their back yards. “We often get free delicious fruits from our friends and neighbors,” she said.
She also notes that “Driscoll Farms have raspberry, blackberry, and strawberry farms nearby so we enjoy these fruits most of the year as well.”
Vegetable Prices at the grocery store in Chapala as of January 2009 exchange rate 13.30 pesos to the dollar
